Before the introduction of adhesives and teh First Allocation of nmbers to Tasmanian Post Offices, post office ideentification was handled several ways. From 1846, country towns used manuscript endorsements of the twon name and date or private handstamps. The two largest towns, Hobart Town and Launcesion, used datestamps of distinctive designs to indicate the post office of origin and type of mail as well as colored inks to designate whether teh mail was sent paid or unpaid.This exhibit shows the development of cancellations in Tasmania as post offices were opened year-by-year and the introduction of numerican cancels.through 1861.The 50 percent growth of Tasmanian postal services in less than eight years created the need to reorganize the numbering system. Post Offices were provided new numeral identification in teh Second Allocation in January 1861.This is a masterful exhibit of Tasmanian postal history. Read more
